This State Means Business

Donna and I live in Maryland, which is an oddly shaped little state that was stuck between Pennsylvania and Virginia to keep Yankees and Confederates from having to rub shoulders with each other.  Our daughter and her husband live near Richmond, so we have occasion to travel Virginia interstates, where I've noticed signs that read, "Speed Limit Enforced by Aircraft." If the signs said, "Speed Monitored by Aircraft" I would tend to believe them, but enforced by aircraft? Exactly how does the state of Virginia go about enforcing speed limits by aircraft?  Do they use a fleet of drones, or do they use attack-helicopters?

"RED TOYOTA VAN WITH NEW YORK PLATES TRAVELING SOUTH ON I- 95. IF YOU DO NOT IMMEDIATELY DECREASE YOUR SPEED, YOU WILL BE FIRED UPON. WE REPEAT, YOU WILL BE FIRED UPON. THIS AIRCRAFT IS EQUIPPED WITH HEAT SEEKING MISSILES, AND ONE IS PRESENTLY LOCKED-ON TO YOUR VEHICLE'S EXHAUST. THIS IS YOUR THIRD AND FINAL WARNING!"

"Coming up on Action News at 11: The Virginia Highway Patrol reports twelve dead and sixteen wounded today in the state's ongoing efforts to enforce speed limits by aircraft. Highway Patrol Captain Lee Davis confirmed that none of the casualties in today's three missile attacks were native Virginians:

‘All appeah to've been northenahs flauntin Vuhginia law on their way to the Magic    Kingdom. We gave the mandatory three wahnins before firin. You might say they got to Tomorrah Land soonah than they expected.'

This brings to 97 the number of casualties this month from Virginia's new Get Tough Policy with speeding Yankees. More after the movie."

Language matters. Accuracy matters. When God revealed Himself to man, He put his revelation in words, specific words, powerful words. "Is not my word like a fire," says the LORD, "and like a hammer that breaks the rock in pieces?" [Jeremiah 23:29] God did not rely upon merely an oral tradition, having his words passed down from father to son, subject to distortion due to imperfect memories. He was very specific. And when God's Word became incarnate, it did so in the form of a specific person.

"And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth." [John 1:14]  There are few things we can do with our time that bring us more eternal benefit than engraving God's words upon our minds. The next time you find yourself waiting in a line, or driving on an interstate, why not chew on a verse of Scripture. If you're in Virginia, you might start with Romans 13:1. It might keep you off the late night news.
